A girl's prayer book from 1914 inspired this group of images, which is an on-going project. It's made me think a lot about how culture, and religion in particular, form our concept of what it means to be a woman and how women should behave. This missive was given to me by my sister; she received it from my paternal grandfather, a Baptist minister.
Reading through the prayers I can see how they affected my ideas of being female. They’re at once funny and infuriating. So I ask myself, have gender roles changed? Do I still believe these ideas?
